ITS Support for Conceptual and Perceptual Connection Making Between Multiple Graphical Representations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Connection making between representations is crucial to learning in STEM domains, but it is a difficult task for students. Prior research shows that supporting connection making enhances students’ learning of domain knowledge. Most prior research has focused on supporting one type of connection-making process: conceptual reasoning about connections between representations. Yet, recent research suggests that a second type of connectionmaking process plays a role in students’ learning: perceptual translation between representations. We hypothesized that combining support for both conceptual and perceptual connection-making processes leads to higher learning gains on a domain-knowledge test. We tested this hypothesis in a lab experiment with 117 undergraduate students using an intelligent tutoring system for chemistry. Results show that the combination of conceptual and perceptual connection-making supports leads to higher learning outcomes. This finding suggests that the effectiveness of educational technologies can be enhanced if they combine support for conceptual and perceptual connection-making processes.

Sequencing Sense-Making and Fluency-Building Support for Connection Making between Multiple Graphical Representations
Multiple graphical representations can significantly improve learning, provided that students make connections between them. In doing so, they need to engage in sense-making processes to build up conceptual understanding of the connections, and in fluency-building processes to fast and effortlessly use perceptual properties to make connections. We investigate how these learning processes intera...
متن کاملComplementary Effects of Sense-Making and Fluency-Building Support for Connection Making: A Matter of Sequence?
Multiple graphical representations can significantly improve students' learning. To acquire robust knowledge of the domain, students need to make connections between the different graphical representations. In doing so, students need to engage in two crucial learning processes: sense-making processes to build up conceptual understanding of the connections, and fluency-building processes to fast...
متن کاملHow can we promote understanding and fluency in learning from multiple representations? Intelligent Tutoring System support for connection making
Multiple graphical representations (MGRs) can improve students’ learning. But students’ benefit from them depends on their ability to make connections between graphical representations (GRs). Based on several studies with an intelligent tutoring system (ITS), I have developed a theoretical model for learning with MGRs. To benefit from MGRs, students need to engage in both sense-making processes...
متن کاملConceptual learning with multiple graphical representations: Intelligent tutoring systems support for sense-making and fluency-building processes
Most learning environments in the STEM disciplines use multiple graphical representations along with textual descriptions and symbolic representations. Multiple graphical representations are powerful learning tools because they can emphasize complementary aspects of complex learning contents. But to benefit from multiple graphical representations, students need to accomplish a number of cogniti...
متن کاملSense Making Alone Doesn't Do It: Fluency Matters Too! ITS Support for Robust Learning with Multiple Representations
Previous research demonstrates that multiple representations of learning content can enhance students’ learning, but also that students learn deeply from multiple representations only if the learning environment supports them in making connections between the representations. We hypothesized that connection-making support is most effective if it helps students make both in making sense of the c...
